Sculptures
To give you a better starting point for your artistic sculpture models, Odd Conjuration offers production of your digital 3D models with our MSLA (resin) manufacturing process. Our MSLA process offers the highest production quality for custom digital 3D models. When obvious layer lines are acceptable and exceptional surface quality are not a priority, we offer FDM (filament) production for multi-color PLA models. MSLA doesn’t eliminate the need for post processing, but is a much better starting point. Sculptures that require assembly from multiple parts will have gaps that require filling. Gap size and placement is also dependent on the quality of fitment designed by the model artist. Smooth areas will have minor layer lines when inspected closely. Supports will leave small “zits” where they connect to the model.
MSLA production uses supports during manufacture which will leave small defects on models. We do our best to place them where they will have the least impact on model quality, but they are unavoidable. We avoid placing models in an orientation that creates supports on front-facing surfaces of models as much as possible. Support imperfections can be removed with sanding or modeling knives.
Odd Conjuration sculptures are manufactured with 30-micron (0.03mm) layer height. This is the minimum currently available for MSLA. At this level of detail, layers are difficult to see without magnification. Bright lighting, glossy paints, and smooth model surfaces increase the likelihood of spotting layer lines. Textured surfaces and matte paints significantly reduce their visibility. Finishing will be necessary to perfect model surfaces. This will include filler primer and fine sanding. Finishing steps are not always necessary for display unless you want perfection. If you would like to reduce cost a little, we can also offer 50-micron layer height, but this will increase visibility of layer lines, especially with bright lighting, glossy paints, and smooth surfaces.
Due to copyright and licensing restrictions, customers must supply their own digital 3D models for production. If you are looking for a source for digital 3D sculpture models, there is a wide variety to choose from. Sites such as gambody.com, myminifactory.com, or lootstudios.com have many great sculpture size models. We also manufacture the many miniatures that you can find on these sites. There are also fantastic artists such as Wicked or SW3D (two of our favorite) on patreon.com. Here are some of the best artists we’ve seen on myminifactory.com:
If you're aware of other sculpture artist sites we should list, please let us know at workshop@oddconjuration.com. Thank you!
