Miniatures
Odd Conjuration offers small batch production of your digital tabletop miniature models with our MSLA (resin) manufacturing process. By “batch” we do not mean that you have to get duplicates of the same model, rather that we will manufacture a set of various minis. You can get individual miniatures, but the per item cost will be higher than it would be for a set.
For most tabletop miniatures which have very fine details and delicate parts, we do not offer FMD (filament) manufacture. We do offer multi-color PLA models with FDM if you need batches of models where obvious layer lines are acceptable and which don’t have the exceptionally fine details or delicate parts of typical miniatures. If layer lines are acceptable for your terrain pieces that don’t have delicate pieces, we will produce them with FDM as well.
MSLA production uses supports during manufacture which will leave small “zits” on models. We do our best to place them where they will have the least impact on model quality, but they are unavoidable. We avoid placing models in an orientation that creates supports on front-facing surfaces of models as much as possible. Support imperfections can be removed with sanding or modeling knives.
Odd Conjuration miniatures are manufactured with 30-micron (0.03mm) layer height. This is the minimum currently available for MSLA. At this level of detail, layers are difficult to see without magnification. Bright lighting, glossy paints, and smooth model surfaces increase the likelihood of spotting layer lines. Textured surfaces and matte paints significantly reduce their visibility. If you are getting miniatures for competition painting, you will want to do finishing to perfect smooth areas of your minis and remove support zits. This will include filler primer and fine sanding. Finishing steps are unnecessary for use in tabletop games or display unless you want perfection. If you would like to reduce cost a little, we can also offer 50-micron layer height, but this will increase visibility of layer lines, especially with bright lighting, glossy paints, and smooth surfaces.
Our miniature production uses a durable and flexible resin. Standard resins are stiff which makes models produced with them very likely to break if they are dropped or handled roughly. Our durable resin doesn’t make the models invincible, though. Our minis will survive tons of gaming sessions, fine parts can survive bending, and models will usually survive a drop off of the gaming table.
Due to copyright and licensing restrictions, customers must supply their own digital 3D models for production. If you are looking for a source for digital 3D miniature models, there is a wide variety to choose from. Some of the best sites we know of are myminifactory.com, and lootstudios.com (if you know of others we should list here, let us know at workshop@oddconjuration.com). Here are some of the best artists we know of on myminifactory.com:
Many of the digital models offered by these artists cross over into the sculpture category. We usually make sculpture models with our firm gray resin instead of the flexible and durable resin. Let us know which you prefer. Model parts must fit within a 200mm x 125mm square and can be up to 210mm tall. If the model comes in parts requiring assembly, gap filling will be required regardless of resin choice. The flexible resin will have more warp and those parts will require more gap filling or sanding for better fitment.
